Abstract | Various authors have recently written about the importance of collective learning. Cultural events, like documentary film festivals, provide important sites for collective learning. Organizers of such events are necessary catalysts that play different roles, from programming to fundraising and audience development to promotion and volunteer coordination. Through their curatorial role, programmers in particular contribute to the educational nature of these events by presenting alternative information and often ignored stories that foster critical thinking, media literacy, and critical self-reflection. Information is key in a democratic society, and when mass media occlude as much as they reveal, channels that present alternative perspectives play an important role in the development of criticality in citizens.
