Abstract | The Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism branch of the National Institute of Health (NIH) indicates that there is no known safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy (NIH, 2015). Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is the leading preventable cause of birth defects and neurodevelopmental abnormalities in the United States, which is not surprising given that 20%-30% of women have reported drinking at some point during pregnancy and 8% of pregnant women reported binge drinking at some time during pregnancy, most often during the first trimester (NIH, 2015). Adding to this challenge is the fact that there is currently no alcohol related diagnostic category in the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" ("DSM") that can be used by behavioral health practitioners to help provide a clear understanding of symptoms. For these and other reasons, prevalence is difficult to know for certain; however, current estimates cite rates of 2-5% in the United States (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). An ever-growing body of evidence describing the effects of PAE has resulted in inclusion of neurobehavioral disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE) in the most recently revised version of the "DSM" under the section, "Conditions for Further Study" (APA, 2013). While not an official diagnosis, the purpose of including it here is to encourage future research and evaluate the appropriateness of including it as a diagnosis. This brief article addresses: (1) Proposed "DSM-5" criteria for ND-PAE (conditions for further study); (2) Rationale for the addition of ND-PAE to "DSM-5" (conditions for further study); (3) Possible consequences of adding ND-PAE to "DSM-5" (conditions for further study); and (4) Implications for school psychology.
