AbstractCreating meaningful professional development opportunities for general education faculty can be particularly challenging at professionally-focused institutions where teaching liberal arts courses is sometimes viewed merely as a service requirement. Committing to sustained professional development for general education faculty can lead to successful integration of rigorous liberal education with professional degrees. Communities of practice are an inexpensive, flexible, and enjoyable means of providing in-house professional development. For many faculty these serve to renew the joy of teaching that drew them to the field initially. A community of practice may take many forms and can, over time, impact the overall culture of the department or division. The authors provide examples of faculty communities of practice from three professionally-focused universities: Champlain College, the Culinary Institute of America, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
