AbstractToday's engineers, designers, and technologists are often thrust into the role of problem solver, from the initial design phase of a product or process all the way to final development. Many engineers in manufacturing environments are tasked with solving problems and continuously improving processes to enhance company profitability, efficiency, and production. It seems that there is always something that can be improved upon or redesigned in a new way that allows it to last longer or perform better. Breakdowns in a production line can be costly, with production halted and workers and machines standing idle. Engineered solutions can also be costly, requiring significant time of engineering, construction, and material expense. There is still the production downtime that it takes to install, test, and run trials to see if any improvement exists. One way to help manage the risk of these costs is by employing the use of computer simulation, when applicable, in the problem-solving and design processes. In this article, the authors present the advantages of computer simulation in the problem-solving and design processes. (ERIC).
