Abstract | Community college presidents often get advice about how to land a job or, once hired, how to be more effective leaders, but they do not hear as much about their role in preparing their institutions for life after their service. Three successful community college presidents share how they left a legacy at their respective community colleges by establishing a culture that served the institutions well and enabled the institutions to thrive in their absence. This article provides community college presidents with an exit strategy for stepping down successfully: (1) Establish a culture of success and develop the talent who will carry on the college's mission; (2) Stay long enough to make a difference; (3) Do not overstay your welcome; and (4) Do not be a lame duck.
