AbstractAs a new wave of unaccompanied minors flowed across the border between Mexico and the United States in 2014, educators began to scramble to educate students who came to them with little or no English, having survived traumatic and arduous immigration journeys, and often with significantly limited formal schooling. Many of these children were resettled in areas as far-flung as New Hampshire and South Carolina, in school districts where services for second-language students were minimal or new. In this article, Zimmerman-Orozco focuses on how educators are meeting the challenge. Extensive interviews with the teachers and students of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and neighboring districts reveal both the size of the challenges these students face and the positive attitude that is enabling them to meet these challenges. The author describes effective instruction strategies for helping students with interrupted formal education (SIFEs) survive and thrive. Ultimately, though, she concludes that the key may not lie in teachers' skills, but in the instinct of children to reach out and connect with others--to find friends. (As Provided).
