Abstract | This article details one teacher's implementation of reading workshop in her second grade classroom. She provided a framework for authentic reading using the five components of reading workshop: time, choice, response, community, and structure. She found that reading workshop is a highly effective practice for not only increasing students' motivation to read and ownership of reading but also increasing students' reading abilities. The results indicate that providing students time to read books of their choice every day leads to student growth in the areas of comprehension, fluency, spelling and vocabulary, which correlates well with the Common Core language arts standards.
