AbstractThe average American produces around 1,600 pounds of garbage every year, and it is estimated that 50 percent of that waste is material that could be composted (Clean Air Council, 2012). Instead, most is sent to landfills and incinerators. In technology and engineering education, a great deal of time is spent in talking, teaching, and thinking about energy: How can more energy-efficient buildings and transportation systems be designed? How realistically can everyone adapt the current systems and embrace sustainable practices and energy sources? There is talk about weatherizing buildings, driving hybrid and electric vehicles, and recycling. Innovation and creative problem solving is encouraged. It is out of this context that the Urban Composting project has been developed for the technology classroom. The project and the reasons to compost are described in this article, through a step-by-step long-term activity to use in the classroom. (ERIC).
