AbstractShortly after discovering that her youngest daughter was deaf, Amie Stelmack began hearing frightening statistics about children who were deaf. Many people--including professionals--told her about shocking statistics. The statistics indicated that deaf children often did not read beyond upper elementary level. They seemed to suggest that this would become her expectation for her daughter, Courtney. Professionals told her that even with hearing aids Courtney would never have access to spoken English. Stelmack writes in this article about a journey that began when she made a conscious decision not to accept the statistics for her child, and not to lower her expectations for Courtney. Hers is a story about a mother who passionately believes that reading nurtures our souls, is our daily bread, and was determined that Courtney's soul would not be allowed to starve simply because she could not hear.
