Abstract	An NCSS Technology Position Statement and Guidelines, published in 2006 (an updated version is published in this issue of "Social Education"), affirms that social studies students should critically examine relations between technology and society. This article describes how teachers can use science fiction to introduce critical questions about these issues. Science fiction, or sci-fi, is distinguished from other narrative genres by its "projections about the future"--it presents a possible future world in order to comment on the actual present, and provides cultural space for examining questions about technological advancement and its consequences for interpersonal relationships and social change. With careful preparation and patient discussion, sci-fi can help foster critical examination of the psychological and social effects of technology. (ERIC).
