AbstractIn this article, the author offers Manet's last paintings as metaphors for a bygone, psychically healthy conception of loss and mourning, what is called the pre-Freudian, Victorian notion of loss (Otto 2008), which contrasts with the post-Freudian, Modern notion of loss and mourning (Otto 2008). Otto argues this liminal, transitional moment in history and Manet's life (as he moves toward death) illuminates loss and mourning as paradoxical, and that within this paradox hides the keys to educating for and during loss and mourning. Beginning by examining the shift between Western, Victorian society's and Western, Modern society's views, attitudes, conventions, and other behaviors surrounding loss and mourning, Otto grounds this historical period of transition primarily in Freudian theory (Otto 2008), and then analyzes Manet's final series of small paintings to elucidate the meaning and value of loss and mourning and thereby begins constructing a personal philosophy of educating children for and during loss and mourning. Finally, Otto illustrates the meaning and value of embracing such a philosophy through a present-day, school-based example of children's loss (Otto 2008; Worley 2006). (ERIC).
