Abstract | Drawing on task-based and intercultural teaching approaches, this article presents an ESL classroom project at two different university settings in which students investigate aspects of their local communities through the use of ethnographic and observational research techniques. For related reasons, the instructors at each university developed the observation project, and this article illustrates a comparison of the curriculum and projects used at the two universities through analyses of final student projects and surveys of students about their experiences completing the project. The multiple data sources point out the power of observation projects--such as the one detailed here--to teach basic language skills and foster intercultural dialogue and reflection. The article ends with a discussion of the pitfalls that the instructors encountered, including the reinforcement of preconceived stereotypes and beliefs, and it offers suggestions for implementing ethnographic and observational learning projects in a variety of settings.
