Abstract | When a mother has a severe and chronic mental illness, her pathway ahead as a parent can be fragile and uncertain. This article describes a therapeutic support group for women with mental illness and reveals how individual women responded to a group that was created to support them in the parenting role. Periods of silence followed by palpable feelings of anger, panic, and sadness sometimes made group progress difficult. When explored, the silences were found to be linked to fears of custody loss or to an anticipated separation from a baby a mother was carrying. When clinicians helped mothers to acknowledge and make sense of these feelings, subtle but vital changes emerged and provided the mothers with a new way of relating. (As Provided). |
