AbstractSummer melt refers to applicants who showed intentions of starting college, but ultimately did not attend. The purpose of this program evaluation was to evaluate a text messaging intervention offered to community college applicants aimed at reducing summer melt of all students, but particularly first-generation students. Applicants often face challenges during the enrollment process related to finances, cumbersome processes, and limited onboarding support. First-generation applicants are particularly vulnerable to these challenges. The program being evaluated sent personalized text messages to applicants every one to two weeks before the start of the fall 2021 semester. The messages were written to encourage two-way communication. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to compare whether applicants who chose to receive text messages from the institution were more likely to register for classes, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and remain enrolled. The study also evaluated if applicants who received messages from the institution were more likely to complete the FAFSA, register for classes, and remain enrolled. The effectiveness of applicants that received and responded to text messages was also evaluated. The study found that applicants who opted to receive text messages were more likely to complete FAFSA, register and remain enrolled beyond the first week of the semester. Two-way communication via text message showed even more applicants completing the FAFSA and registering for classes.
