AbstractStudents of color, particularly African American male students were less likely to have rich, engaging, and positive experiences in traditional classroom settings prior to the pandemic. With the onset of COVID-19, classrooms shifted from traditional settings to virtual ones immediately, forcing teachers and students to navigate newly virtual spaces in which they had not before. Research indicates that all students were affected by the transition, but marginalized and vulnerable populations such as those from a low socioeconomic background and those racially and linguistically diverse, were impacted the most. On the contrary, others report that African American male students are striving in virtual learning environments, as they no longer have to navigate a space that historically excludes them, the traditional classroom. Therefore, this study intends to explore how African American male students experience virtual settings as compared to traditional classroom settings through the lens of African American male teachers. Thus, in order to gain true understanding of African American male students and their needs for the learning spaces they enter, it is critical to seek their authentic experiences, stories and opinions. The African American male teacher perspective on virtual learning environments for African American male students is the perspective that matters.
