AbstractThis treatise aims to explore the evolution of pre-screening audition requirements for college music programs and demonstrate best practices for producing professional pre-screening audition recordings for graduate school, competitions, and music festivals. By learning and applying professional audio-video recording skills, students can learn to record their pre-screening recordings for various platforms, providing opportunities for education and performance while emphasizing entrepreneurship and advancement. While all remote audition recordings require video (and audio), the guidelines and technical requirements surrounding the submission process are evolving annually. As students plan and prepare multiple lists of audition repertoire, the importance of the actual recording process is often overlooked. Post-pandemic technological advances in media (specifically audio/video and file transfer/shared media platforms) have provided numerous opportunities to simultaneously capture HD video and high-resolution audio. The first part of this document focuses on university music programs and their pre-screening audition requirements. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce basic audio and video terminology, gear, and recording fundamentals. Chapter 4 features in-depth explanations of how the materials learned in chapters 2 and 3 can be applied to capture pre-screening recordings at the highest level. Chapter 5 contains guiding wisdom and thoughts offered by the author to college music students interested in learning audio-video recording, including starting a recording business, how to find work, and the variety of opportunities available to college music students interested in taking up recording as an additional source of income and/or potential career path. Finally, Part Two contains supplemental advanced audio and video terminology for those interested in further study. There are a variety of supplemental reference files linked in the footnotes throughout the document. For an accurate experience, the reader should listen to these files using closed-back headphones or high-quality speakers. All of the recordings feature the marimba, because the instrument has the single widest stereo image of any classical instrument.
