AbstractLatino students are enrolling in college at higher rates than any other demographic, but these developments have not been reflected in increased retention or degree completion rates. A disparity in the rate of degree achievement between Latino males and their counterparts has been referred to as the "vanishing Latino male" phenomenon. Colleges and universities are concerned with the attrition rate and have hinted those Latino cultural traits, such as machismo or familismo, may be to blame and making it harder for them to remain in college. Using a transcendental phenomenological approach to study this issue, the lived experiences of Latino male students give insight into major themes that arise in the one-on-one interviews and subsequent focus groups conducted with five to 10 Latino male students living at a 4-year institution. Galvanizing the experiences of the Latino males using a transcendental phenomenological approach from the interviews' common themes provides an opportunity to gather data that explain the larger narrative of the phenomenon of the vanishing Latino male to exist. The gap in the research poses aquestion of whether there is a deficit perspective assuming that students leave school because of their inherent desire to support cultural norms. The main findings of this research show that the vanishing Latino male phenomenon is present, and the main themes found in the lived experience of Latino males are familismo and economic impact.
