AbstractI was a person who identified as culturally Deaf but at the same time had progressive vision loss. I embraced my Deaf identity, but I did not embrace any inkling of identifying myself as a DeafBlind person considering the stigma associated with it. Due to that stigma, the journey of identifying as a DeafBlind person is difficult mentally, physically, and emotionally. The study has two main research questions: "Why did I struggle with identifying myself as a DeafBlind person? What recommendations would I make for improvements to future generations grieving their sensory loss and embracing their identities?" The first question has three sub questions: Were my struggles related to the fact that I grew up with a stigma associated with the DeafBlind identity? What process do I need to go through to dissociate from the stigma? How can I accept the fact that other people will not understand my circumstances and not blame them for their ignorance? The methodology picked is autoethnography using the seven lenses of autoethnography (Custer, 2014). Data collection consisted of my personal journals and memories along with artifacts, such as photographs, self-observation, field notes, video recording, archival data, open-ended survey, field notes using systematic reflective introspection, and active participant notes. Data analysis included a combination of emotion analysis and thematic analysis. At the end of this study, I do not expect an immediate solution to my issues, but more of a meaningful understanding of my journey that can lead me to the next chapter.
