Abstract | In the United States, there were 7,999 bachelor's degree programs in education in 2014 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). A minority of these programs were early childhood education (ECE) degree programs, of which there were approximately 1,200 as of 2009 (Hyson et al., 2009). Hyson et al. questioned the quality of ECE degree programs, mainly focusing on the nature of interactions between faculty and students. However, little research has specifically explored student involvement in practicum experiences that are part of these ECE programs. The aim of this phenomenological study was to explore student involvement in undergraduate ECE practicum experiences at higher education institutions in the northeastern United States. The study used interviews and surveys from eight students who had recent practicum experiences in classrooms ranging from preschool through 2nd grade as part of their ECE or elementary education programs. Interviews were one-on-one and semistructured, with open-ended questions designed to draw out participants' perspectives on their experiences of various aspects of involvement with practica and their programs. Institutions could use these data in a variety of ways to foster greater student involvement. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
