AbstractThis research study examined the campus culture of two community colleges in North Carolina. These colleges were selected based on language included in their mission statements. The campus culture of each institution was explored through the lived experiences of minority (African American and Hispanic) students attending those colleges. Native American students were included as a minority group; however, no Native Americans participated in this study. The focus of this study was on how institutional culture influences academic motivation in minority students. There is an academic disparity between White and minority students. Six themes emerged from this study that influence a student's academic performance. These themes included a lack of diversity and minority representation, benefits of supportive programs, and sense of belonging and acceptance. This phenomenological study afforded students the opportunity to give voice to their campus experience. As a result, it was determined that minority students begin college with an innate motivation to succeed and that motivation is either diminished or fostered by the culture of their institution.
