AbstractUsing mathematically unsound scales and inequitable grading practices has complicated the grading process for teachers and created educational barriers for students. This quantitative study compared the effect of the 100-point percentage and 4-point interval grading scale on Algebra 1 final grades. This study also investigated if there was a significant difference noted in the proportions between the 100-point and 4-point Algebra 1 course failures in terms of race, gender, and disability status. The results from the study indicated that the number of Algebra 1 course failures on the 100-point scale was significantly higher than those on the 4-point scale when comparing the two grading scales and also regarding gender, race, and particular education disability. The selected school district uses the 100-point grading scale. However, to counteract the effects of zeros on the 100-point scale, the school district has implemented an Excel Grade Calculation Spreadsheet containing built-in formulas that convert a student's 100-point scale grade to the 4-point scale. Although the Excel Grade Calculation Spreadsheet helps hundreds of students in the district, several students slip through each year and are not awarded the correct grade. Suggestions on how to correct this issue are explored, as well as other ways school districts can seek new ways to improve their current grading practices.
