Abstract | This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of seven Black male community college students. The study was designed to learn about their college journey using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The study used semi-structured interviews to capture Black males' perceptions, feelings, and challenges related to their experiences at a rural community college. The questions focused on participants' motivations for attending a community college, the factors contributing to their success, and the community college's role in supporting student persistence and retention. Findings from the study reveal that Black males were motivated to attend community college to participate in athletics and transfer to a 4-year college, faced many obstacles, including preconceived societal stereotypes, and valued relationships with individual college personnel. Recommendations for practice include recognizing and supporting the capital possessed by Black male community college students, supporting athletics in its role as a motivator for recruitment, retention, and persistence, establishing partnerships with community entities, developing recruitment materials and supportive programs for Black males, and ongoing diversity education and training for college students, faculty, and staff.
