AbstractThe gender gap in American undergraduate students' participation in study-abroad programs is a persistent phenomenon. According to the Institute of International Education (2022a), male students have represented between 32.7% and 36.5% of all American students abroad between the 2007-2008 and 2018-2019 academic years. Research similarly shows that male undergraduate students exhibit a lower intention to study abroad than their female peers (Kim & Lawrence, 2021; Lingo, 2019; Luo & Jamieson-Drake, 2015; Salisbury et al, 2009; Stroud, 2010). Scholarship also suggests that their participation in study-abroad programs is shaped by subjective norms surrounding masculinity and gender (Lucas, 2009; Thirolf, 2014; Yankey, 2014). Consequently, this research study sought to understand how male undergraduate students make sense of their intention to study abroad. It adopted Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior as a theoretical framework to better examine the attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control that male undergraduate students experience while attempting to study abroad. Six male undergraduate students participated in individual sets of semi-structured interviews pertaining to their experiences while applying and preparing to participate in a traditional semester-abroad program. The resulting data was then analyzed by the methods prescribed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith et al., 2022). Overall, this research study found male undergraduate students understand the decision to study abroad as intuitive and subsequently justified by rational processes of fact-finding. Furthermore, this student population's intention to study abroad is fueled by a strong desire for self-actualization, which is supported by the social and cultural capital derived from their peer, familial, and institutional networks. Lastly, this research study found that male undergraduate students understand their intention to study abroad in ways that both confirm and defy adherence to traditional masculine norms.
