Abstract | Massachusetts General Law does not recognize students as stakeholders in school turnaround, despite extant literature supporting the benefits of including students as decision makers in their education experiences. The purpose of this Action Research study was to understand why student voices are critical to successful school turnaround, and to raise awareness and influence the attitudes of school leaders about the value of including student voice in school turnaround efforts at high schools in Massachusetts. Data for this research study was collected during two cycles of research, through the use of semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in school turnaround, as well as surveys. Findings from this study suggest that student voice is not only valuable to school turnaround efforts, but for school turnaround to be efficacious, students must be included as stakeholders. Turnaround schools should emphasize taking a collaborative approach to leadership that creates opportunities for student voices to be leveraged to drive organizational change.
