Abstract | Creativity and academic achievement are essential components for high school students' success. Learning creative thinking is uncommon in school largely due to the lack of effective implementation and assessment in classrooms. The problem addressed in this study was high school students' lack of creative thinking as measured by the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking may be predictive of poor academic achievement as measured by grade point average. Creativity has become important in education in the 21st century because increasing school, state, and national standards require it for student achievement. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between students' academic achievement as measured by their grade point average and their creativity as measured by the TTCT. The conceptual framework was based on the investment theory of creativity. The sample consisted of 60 high school students who took the TTCT at the end of their school year. The result of the analysis of this study indicated there was no relationship between the verbal and figural test scores on the TTCT and the students' grade point average. Creative thinking is related to the skills needed for acquiring global career opportunities, which expand exponentially together with novice innovations and 21st-century skills developing simultaneously. Recommendations include providing students with more creative thinking instruction involving participation in collaborative settings where they can share their ideas and exercise their creativity. Future studies should include using a larger sample or exploring perceptions regarding the importance of creative thinking to success. Creative thinking is essential in facing different challenges and successfully competing in society. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
