AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how Christian Black males described experiences that contributed to their hardiness to graduate from college. It is not known how Christian Black males described experiences that contributed to their hardiness to graduate from college. The results aligned with Kobasa's hardiness model explained persons with more hardiness have extreme self-commitment, a robust attitude towards surroundings, a sense of purpose, and self-control. The following research questions guided this qualitative descriptive study: How do Christian Black males describe the ways college experiences contributed to their development of hardiness to graduate from college? How do Christian Black males describe the ways Christianity contributed to their development of hardiness to graduate from college? The purposive sample for this study consisted of 13 video and audio recorded interviews and two focus groups utilizing Zoom. The researcher used Braun and Clark six-phase process for thematic analysis. MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software offered scrutiny of the contexts in which the words appeared, and subsequent development of codes and themes. Data analysis yielded six themes: (1) personal stress; (2) academic stress; (3) financial stress; (4) emotional challenges; (5) a relationship with God; (6) supportive relationships. The results of this study concluded themes from research question one focused on struggles participants experienced during college and not hardiness strategies. Additionally, a relationship with God and supportive relationships were essential elements for a graduate degree.
