AbstractAfrican American (AA) male youth across the United States are often detained or committed to juvenile facilities at a higher rate than most population groups due to criminal or delinquent behavior. The research explored the risk and protective factors associated with delinquency for this population while bringing awareness to delinquency and vital related outcomes (aggression, drug use, academic functioning, etc.) as a prevention issue. Mentorship programs have geared their efforts towards reducing or preventing young AA males from committing delinquent behavior by implementing several mentorship strategies (Brown, 2009). Despite these efforts, AA male youth still struggle and reflect this high rate, striking the intense need for more prevention interventions geared towards mentoring (Hye-Kyung & Burton, 2014). This applied inquiry research explored the perceptions of former mentees on the effectiveness of mentorship programs in preventing AA male youth from delinquent behavior and related outcomes. This research utilized semi-structured interviews to help achieve the purpose, asking former young AA male mentees to reflect on their experiences within a mentorship program called "ManUp." Additionally, the former mentees were asked to discuss their opinions on the potential need for additional mentorship program efforts for young AA males (like them) in their communities.
