Abstract | This study examined the relationship of a medium-sized coastal community college with African American males' choices concerning college transfer or career and technical education. The studied college serves two counties, forming a diverse community located in a southeastern North Carolina city. The combined population of both counties was nearly 300,000 people in 2019. The research uncovered a gap in African American male student completion and success research, while seeking to target the population with the best-suited programs. This study used a mixed-methods approach employing both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Relevant data were obtained from the North Carolina Community College System. From the 986 surveys sent out, 41 responses were returned, with 100% completion. Out of the 41 survey participants, six volunteered for a follow-up interview and none for the focus group. To be a major educational force, educational leaders must serve the community, creating a learning-centered institution to build and improve the lives of individuals. Although this goal is often impeded in underserved groups, the target community college has been lauded for its efforts to be more diverse and inclusive. The study sought to determine why African American males might choose one program over the other in their pursuit of finding a better academic fit for future goals, attainment, retention, and completion. A diverse group of African American male participants generally provided similar responses. The findings reflected that their choice heavily relied upon familial predisposition, reassurance, inspiration, or encouragement.
