AbstractCommunity colleges have long served a diverse population of students. Prior research shows that Black males have the lowest graduation rate compared to men of other races and even females of the same race. This qualitative study aimed to research the effects of sense of belonging on Black male retention at one community college in the Northeast portion of the United States. Data collection consisted of one-on-one interviews with five Black males who had less than 18 credits left to graduate. The findings highlighted students found motivation from family and their own want to succeed and attributed their retention to involvement in campus activities and relationships with peers, staff, and faculty. This study concludes with implications for future research and recommendations to support academic success in Black male students enrolled in community colleges.
