AbstractThis explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined athletic participation rates between 2016 and 2019 of nine male IHSA-sanctioned sports in Illinois. The quantitative portion examined whether a statistically significant difference exists between low socioeconomic students and non-low-income high school students' participation in high school athletics. The qualitative portion of the study was designed to gain a better understanding of what led to the athletic participation gap among high school students in Illinois. The relationship between local communities, small, rural high school communities and large, suburban high school communities, and school districts when considering socioeconomic status and participation was analyzed in qualitative results. Findings from this study demonstrated that group behavior is a significant influencing factor to participation. Other factors associated with the individual, and how the individual relates to their own identification within a group and how the individual verifies the significance of group behavior were found. In addition, these factors were found to be influenced by students' socioeconomic status and the local community influences, such as school size and school location. Findings from this study demonstrated the variance level in athletic participation is explained by school enrollment and low-income or poverty levels and location. In addition, larger, suburban schools are experiencing higher rates of decline in high school athletic participation, and students of poverty are participating at a decreased rate. Qualitative findings stressed the incorporation of social emotional learning (SEL) needs into athletic programs as a solution to the participation gap found in the results of the study. Implications for practice include a discussion of resource allocation to overcome issues associated with poverty and the necessity of school districts to incorporate SEL into athletic programs to increase participation rates and foster participants' positive experiences in high school athletics.
