AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative study was to uncover effective parental styles that have led to successful outcomes for community college Black males, a population that has historically fared badly and whose plight has shown limited academic success. Despite pervasive negative perceptions in society and historical references, such as low college graduation rates for Black males, this research offered how Black males have tackled barriers and succeeded academically. The goal of this work was to narrow the gaps in literature by adding success narratives, which is lacking in current literature. Semi-structured interviews, the main data collection tool, were supported by reflexivity, purposive sampling, emerging themes, and comparative analysis. Throughout the interviews, the participants described their lived experiences or perceptions about parental actions, approaches that have influenced their ability to succeed, and meanings that they ascribed to useful parental engagements and familial environments. An intensive literature review provided the background for understanding how hindrances have impacted Black males in pursuit of higher education and lifetime opportunities. Results of the study provided insight into the role that families play, the importance of parental support on successful collegiate experiences, and a foundation for informing future research relative to varied familial dynamics with the targeted population. Educators must be cognizant of barriers that hamper student outcomes and devise ways to best support the retention and recruitment of Black male students. Based on the findings from this study, recommendations include understanding how the parental experiences of Black males may be incorporated into programming to inform programs and services, which might boost a positive academic trajectory and prevent negative life outcomes.
