AbstractEvery demographic in the American education sector has been impacted by the forced migration from face-to-face to online learning caused by COVID-19. This research looks at six faculty members' perceptions regarding their views on social presence and what influences or drives their instructional practices at Nichols College. Social presence is a key component of quality online education. The more connected faculty feel to their online courses, the more interactive components they design in and the greater opportunity for community-building. More specifically, this research examined the extent to which asynchronous instructor-generated videos influenced perceptions of their social presence pertaining to their interaction, engagement, and connectedness to their course design, students, and teaching. The findings demonstrate that training and support for online course design and instructor-generated videos improve faculty perceptions of preparedness for teaching online courses and the development of engagement to create communities in the OLE. Further research can examine the parasocial relationships and reciprocity in online education. The findings can be used by faculty developers, faculty, and instructional designers to design and implement effective practices and faculty online training for improvements to instructional design and teaching practices.
