Abstract | Organizations develop cultures which are impacted by leaders, and within the high school setting, coaches are leaders. Therefore, coaches directly impact school culture through leadership and have the unique opportunity to lead during a formative time in athletes' lives. Because leadership has been proven as influential in athletics, it should be viewed as a tool by athletic administrators for hiring coaches. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a statistically significant correlation between the leadership styles, winning percentages, years of experience, and leadership outcomes of coaches. The population consisted of South Carolina high school football coaches that coached during the 2020 football season. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X short was used as the instrument to evaluate leadership styles and outcomes. The Spearman's correlation was the method of determining statistical significance between the variables of leadership styles, winning percentages, years of experience, and leadership outcomes. Results supported that there is a negative correlation between passive avoidant leadership and winning percentages of South Carolina high school football coaches. Results also supported that there is a positive correlation between coaches with a transformational leadership style and leadership outcomes. Results showed that there was no correlation between winning percentages and years of experience. It is the goal that the findings will drive future hiring practices to use leadership styles of the coaches to determine the possibility of future success.
