Abstract | The purpose of this qualitative research study is to gain an understanding of what support systems Black male undergraduates used while attending one predominately White institution (PWI). In conducting the research, the various experiences students had on campus were also influenced by the support or lack of support they had while attending their institution. In learning from their experiences, the intention is to encourage the development of programs specifically targeted at the retention and persistence of this group. Graduation rates for Black male undergraduates, both at the location of research and across the United States, are less than their peers who identify as males of color and their White peers. This was another motivation for researching this particular group of students. To be retained at their institution, the majority of the research participants demonstrated some form of resilience. Results were further divided into factors that positively affected a student's experience and those that negatively affected a student's experience. Finally, results indicated that the majority of the research participants did receive some support, either personally or from their PWI.
