Abstract | A qualitative phenomenological methodology was used to interview formerly incarcerated African American and Hispanic males about their perceptions and lived experiences with correctional education programs. The problem addressed by this study is the challenges that incarcerated individuals face while participating in correctional education programs administered by the Pacific Coast region's Department of Corrections. The study sample was 11 male formerly incarcerated individuals over the age of 18 who were incarcerated in the Pacific Coast region of the United States. Self-efficacy, the social learning theory, and the transformative learning theory are the frameworks for the study that help explain the phenomenon that correctional education can provide incarcerated individuals with the tools to have a lawful and productive life. The interview questions were crafted to elicit rich descriptive responses that narrated the educational experiences of the participants. Specifically, the participants shared the influences of long waitlists; the carceral environment; impact of course offerings; available resources, support, and expertise by carceral personnel; and the impact of family member financial and emotional support. The participants advocated that correctional education be viewed as a significant component of rehabilitation and transformation for incarcerated individuals. A summary of critical points of the interviews formed the foundation to identify the study's emergent themes. As the policymakers and carceral personnel look for opportunities to address mass incarceration rates for underserved populations in the United States, continued research on rehabilitation programs like correctional education programs will be needed. This study adds to the body of knowledge on correctional education programs. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
