Abstract | Ever since the publication of "A Nation at Risk" (1983), and in particular over the last 15 years with the implementation of federal policies such as the No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] (2002) and its successor, Every Student Succeeds Act (2017), the spotlight on how failing schools support our neediest and most marginalized students has only gotten brighter. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, one strategy to assist in improving underperforming or chronically-underperforming schools is to designate them as "turnaround schools." This designation allows for additional funds and supports to improve school and student performance rapidly. Since the introduction and use of the "turnaround school" designation began in 2009, only one secondary school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has successfully exited turnaround status. This high school, located in an urban center and serving almost 98% students of color, will be the site for this qualitative single-site case study. This descriptive case study will investigate how the principal led this school community out of "turnaround status" by not only understanding how her professional background aided her to take on this role but also exploring the challenges she prioritized to address and why. Additionally, time will be spent investigating what systems and structures she felt were critical to her school's success. This case study will utilize in-depth, semi-structured interviews and document analysis to assist in answering these questions. Multiple rounds of coding and data analysis will occur to ensure study limitations are minimized. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
