Abstract | This study presents the qualitative results of seven parents who taught their preschool-aged children reading skills using a Direct Instruction book, "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" by Siegfried Engelmann, during a 2-month time frame. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore the lived experiences of parents as they used this program to instruct their children who had never had a formal schooling experience and who may not until kindergarten. This resource may equip parents with an instructional method designed for students as early as 3 years of age in the pursuit of helping children learn to read, while connecting parents to the teaching and learning process. This study utilized pre- and post-surveys, interviews, and implementation feedback to gather data on the participants' experiences and progress with this reading program. The seven participants were mothers with children from 3 to 5 years of age, with an interest in home-schooling. The results showed that some of the parents could teach their child reading skills and develop their child's reading ability, while other parents struggled due to myriad factors such as scheduling, interruptions in the daily routine, language barriers, and various other obstacles. The program was an overall positive experience, with a ratio of 4:1 positive-to-negative feedback. The experience taught these parents about their interactions with their children, made them more aware of the difficulties of the teaching process, and allowed them some insights into making more informed educational choices to meet the needs of their individual children.
