AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine whether students who participate in school athletics at Blue High School (a pseudonym) in Maryland perform better academically regarding GPA, attendance, and in-school referrals, in-season versus out-of-season. This study focused on athletic participation and academic achievement. An examination of coaches' perceptions were examined to address whether student-athletes perform better academically during in-season play versus out-of-season. The methodology used was a qualitative study, which consisted of interviews and a focus group made up of head coaches. The study also examined descriptive statistics that was used to guide the focus group data analysis review. From the overall results, six distinct themes emerged from the interviews and the focus group data analysis review that were synthesized: (1) transferable skills, (2) progress monitoring, (3) study hall, (4) sport influence, (5) coach influence, and (6) accountability for actions. In summary, the findings suggest that the coaches at Blue High School (a pseudonym) in Maryland were in agreement that student-athletes perform better academically regarding GPA, attendance, and in-school referrals during in-season play compared to out-of-season.
