Abstract	In faculties of education of recently developed universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, student research supervisors for Bachelor's programmes are charged with a complicated task. They are expected to supervise students in conducting research within the context of a system that has yet to define research for its own purposes, to determine what students should learn from research and what the best ways to achieve this might be. In order to gain a toehold for navigating this complex practice, supervisors must rely primarily on their own experience and, where present, the vision of their own institution towards applied research conducted by students. Sometimes such institutional vision exists, but quite often it has not been parsed to the level of specific competencies that student research supervisors need to accomplish their task. Those supervising students in conducting research in universities of applied sciences rarely have a research background themselves. For the most part they possess theoretical knowledge gained during their own university education, often many years previously. And even this theoretical knowledge usually does not involve specific knowledge of the methodology for applied research; it is by definition knowledge of matters other than what it means to supervise students with their thesis. In this article we will consider the development of teacher educators during participation in a professionalisation programme for student research supervisors at the Faculty of Education of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). The programme involves both the knowledge of how applied research is conducted and training to develop skills to supervise and evaluate applied research conducted by students. We will endeavour to identify the knowledge that is new to participants of the professionalization programme and what the implications of this new knowledge are for the role they envision for themselves in supervising students who are conducting research.
