AbstractThis study examined the extent to which student-athletes' academic preparation, social interaction and personal development are affected by gender, type of institution and athletic activity. Specifically, the study is concerned with the independent and combined effect of gender, type of institution, and athletic activity on the academic preparation, social interaction, and personal development on college athletes. Participants in this study included 4,385 college student-athletes involved in the Student College Report under the auspices of the National Survey of Student Engagement at Indiana University. The college athletes were described by their gender, age, ethnicity, classification, type of institution and athletic activity. Data analysis consisted of two primary components. The first dealt with the demographic characteristics of the participants in the study, and the second involved analysis of the four null hypotheses formulated for the study. A 2x2x2 Analysis of Variance Factorial Design was used to treat the data. All hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance or better. Gender (male and female), type of institution (predominantly Black institution (HBCU) and predominantly White institution (PWI)) and athletic activity (basketball and track) were the independent variables. The academic preparation, social interaction and personal development were the dependent variables. One of the most interesting findings of the study was the significant impact that gender had on the academic preparation of college athletes. Female college athletes had significantly higher academic preparation scores than their male counterparts. Nonetheless, when gender interacted with the variable type of institution, male college athletes who attended HBCUs had significantly higher academic preparation scores than female college athletes at the same type of institution. The variables type of institution and athletic activity, separately, did not produce a significant effect on the academic preparation scores of college athletes. However, the variables gender and type of institution, combined, produced a significant impact on the academic preparation scores of college athletes. The interaction of gender and athletic activity, type of institution and athletic activity and gender, type of institution and athletic activity did not produce significant effects on the academic preparation scores of college athletes.
