Abstract | Reflective functioning has been referred to as the ability to understand intentions, motives, and actions in both oneself and others. This study explored reflective functioning in African American single mothers of infant and toddler children. Mothers were asked to participate in four psycho-educational group discussions that included information, education, and opportunities for reflection. The purpose of the psycho-educational group discussions was to examine each mother's language about her experiences with her child and her perception of her child's behavior. The psycho-education group discussions focused on engaging the mothers in mindfulness meditation practices and opportunities for self-reflection in order to encourage a dialogue about parental perceptions and understanding of various interactions with children. A qualitative research design was used to explore the mothers' reflective functioning. An interpretative phenomenological approach was employed to understand the nature of meaning of the mothers' everyday experiences. This qualitative phenomenological study utilized semistructured interviews of seven mothers, ranging in age from 21 to 45 years, from an urban community with infant and toddler children who attended an early childhood educational facility. The mothers were interviewed for 90 minutes before and after the four psycho education group sessions. Analysis of the post-discussion interviews was used to determine changes in the mothers' reflective functioning. The results of this study revealed that awareness of and opportunities to practice reflective functioning improved the mother-child relationships. The results also revealed that reflective functioning awareness and knowledge of reflective functioning changed the way in which mothers communicated with their children.
