AbstractThe purpose of this research study was to gain understanding and insight from a group of employees at Washington Adventist University (WAU) as to the benefits of having a Knowledge Management System with security access controls using the Role Based Access Control model to protect knowledge. The information from this research can help fill the gap in the research related to the relevance of Knowledge Management and security. Knowledge is critical to an organization's survival, success and competitiveness. A review of the literature on Knowledge Management and Security disclosed that a gap exists in the research on Knowledge Management, Knowledge Management Systems and Security. The current research study provided a review of a case study at WAU using its Knowledge Management System to investigate why security is not an aspect of their system. The study explored the benefits of the Role Based Access Control (RBAC) model. In depth interviews were conducted to gain an understanding and insight from ten (10) employees. The interviews were conducted face-to-face for an average of twenty-five (25) minutes per participant. The validity and reliability of the study were addressed through data triangulation, analyzing of the Knowledge Management System and established techniques of qualitative data analysis. The research revealed that using the RBAC model is an efficient means of protecting and preserving Knowledge Management and Knowledge Management Systems. Although Knowledge Management has proven to be successful in organizations without the core aspect of security, in today's world, security is an integral part of the protection and preservation of knowledge.
