Abstract | The shortage of women in science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields has been an issue that has garnered the attention of educators, industry and governments alike. Although there have been other inquiries that have provided factors to reduce the shortages of women in STEM, the problem still exists. This study used the qualitative narrative inquiry approach to hearing the unique stories of women who work in the STEM fields. Each of the study's participants or storytellers has her unique approach and explanation of why they remained or chose a career in STEM when others either quit or left the STEM fields. Utilizing the qualitative narrative inquiry approach to research provides a way to view individual lives in a more detailed fashion. The storytellers' perceptions of the events and reasons that led to their decision to pursue a STEM career will be carefully captured by the researcher to uncover information that has yet to be investigated.
