AbstractThis exploratory study attempted to examine both the words and the prosody/melody of the language within the framework of Bucci's Multiple Code Theory. The sample consisted of twelve audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews of child and adolescent psychoanalysts who were asked to describe their work with patients. It is observed that emotionally engaged language style has a distinct acoustic/vocal production, which consisted of either the variation or the mean of intensity/loudness in the tone of voice. On the other hand, when reflection (intellectualization) was high in the language style, there was less physiological arousal in the tone of voice. The results revealed repetitive patterns in terms of how the language style and the acoustic picture appear when jointly observed. These findings not only support Bucci's theoretical conceptualizations, but also demonstrate the acoustic (nonverbal) picture of emotional immersion as reflected in the choice of words. The study also explored the possible differences in acoustic and linguistic variables depending on analysts' type of practice, which was divided into those child and adolescent analysts currently having in analysis child and adolescent cases (CA Group) and those currently not (Non-CA Group), with six analysts in each group. When talking about their patients, the CA Group spoke more as measured by total word count; had more seconds of overall speech; had more disfluency; and showed more variation of intensity/loudness than the Non-CA group. This linguistic and acoustic picture of the CA Group shows that they are more emotionally engaged when they describe their patients, which might be an indication of their deeper emotional involvement with their patients. The present study represents a crucial first step in systematically and jointly studying the vocal/acoustic and the linguistic qualities of language.
