AbstractBeing a principal in today's high-stakes environment is a highly demanding job. Much has been written about the stress principals now face in responding to the increased demands and pressures associated with the role. Districts nationwide continue go to great lengths to find administrators of the highest caliber capable of meeting these increasing demands. As a growing number of women assume the principalship at a younger age, a unique set of challenges has emerged. Finding partners and starting a family is difficult, as female principals typically work long hours and expend tremendous energy to succeed. For principals who are married with children, the challenges are also great. Competing demands and divided priorities often create consequences that are rarely discussed. Support from colleagues, supervisors, and family proved to be essential in for study participants in combating these consequences. Setting personal boundaries and realizing that work should not be the only aspect of one's life also proved essential for women who were able to "have it all." Policymakers should address women's career challenges, since feminist leadership skills have been proven to create the conditions for successful schools, and the number of women in the principalship is growing nationwide.
