Abstract | Teen motherhood is a problem in the United States, resulting in higher drop-out rates, lower GPAs, and worse attendance rates than for female teens without children. To address issues that teen mothers face, the California Department of Education implemented the Cal-SAFE program; however, budget cuts have closed many of the Cal-SAFE sites. While a full-scale assessment was conducted on Cal-SAFE's overall statewide program in 2010, the child care portion of the program was not researched with respect to GPA, attendance rates, and graduation rates. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the Cal-SAFE program's child care services and its effect on attendance rates, GPAs, and graduation rates of teen mothers. Social support theories provided the framework for this study, specifically demonstrating the importance of providing support services for teen mothers enrolled in a Cal-SAFE program. Research questions addressed differences in attendance rates, GPAs, and graduation rates between teen mothers who used Cal-SAFE's child care services and those who did not. A between-group analysis of variance as well as a chi square analysis was used to analyze data from 118 Cal-SAFE participants who either used or who did not use the child care services. Mothers who used child care services had significantly higher attendance rates and significantly higher GPAs than mothers who did not use the services. Similarly, mothers who used child care services had significantly higher graduates rates than mothers who did not use the services. Implications for social change include providing research-based data on the efficacy of the Cal-SAFE child care program to decision makers, both within and outside of California; implementation of Cal-SAFE's philosophy in other programs may, in turn improve educational outcomes for teen mothers.
