AbstractThis dissertation analyzes the change from the New Testament church practice of having the responsibility for ministry rest upon the entire congregation, clergy and laity alike, to the current practice of the responsibility for ministry resting almost exclusively upon the clergy. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of Christians being accountable to use their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the church, to disciple converts, and for the advancement of the Kingdom, whereas leaders are accountable to equip Christians to employ their gifts for the upbuilding of the church and for discipling believers. Chapter 1 also summarizes ecclesiastical organization and use of the laity in the church. Chapter 2 covers the historical development of the clergy/laity division in the church, reviewing the New Testament period; the first four centuries with the growth of the idea of apostolic succession and the authority of bishops, along with an examination of three church manuals; the fifth through the fifteenth centuries with the institution of the pope and the Latin translation of the Bible; the Reformation and the Radical Reformation churches; and the twenty-first century with its different approaches to church organization. Chapter 3 investigates the concept of discipleship in the New Testament and in later church development. This chapter also examines the future of discipleship. Chapter 4 summarizes the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the previous chapters and suggests future topics for research.
