| Abstract | The educational opportunities afforded by the public schools and public libraries of the United States represent a distinctive contribution to the democratic way of life. For many years, the American public library has provided an opportunity for the voluntary pursuit of culture through books and reading. As part of its educational program, the U.S. Office of Education has collected and published statistics of public libraries periodically since 1870. Its first comprehensive collection of data from public libraries in the United States however, was made in 1938-39. This bulletin for 1944-45, therefore, is the second in a new series designed to set forth at regular intervals the status of public library service throughout the Nation. It is hoped that these basic statistics of public libraries in the United States will prove useful to educators, librarians, governing bodies, and others concerned with the effective development of public library service as an important aspect of American education.
