Abstract | The growth of cities has created many new social, economic, and educational problems in the United States, for within a half century the country has become not predominantly rural but predominantly urban. The cities of the country have become the centers of political, industrial, and commercial power, as well as of wealth, education, and culture. But they are also centers of poverty, ignorance, and crime. Since the city of today is the problem of society, the kind of education given city children is vitally important, not only for the present generation but for the whole future of the country. Work, play, and contact with nature--are fundamental in the education of children, and unless the cities provide these fundamentals, the city child will receive only an artificial education--what he reads in books. The administration of city schools has become a complicated matter. In this bulletin attention is given to the following problems and movements in city schools: (1) Administration; (2) School buildings; (3) Work-study-play or platoon schools; (4) Economy and efficiency; (5) Teachers' salaries; (6) Improvement of teachers in service; (7) Teachers' councils; (8) The visiting teacher; (9) School publicity; (10) The all-year school; (11) Individual instruction; (12) Curriculum revision; and (13) The junior high school.
