AbstractParenting stress may be inevitable for any parent. However, stress can be even greater for parents with children who have disabilities. Among parents of children with disabilities, parents of children with autism are particularly at risk of feeling overwhelmed due to the specific developmental condition and characteristics of children who have autism. Parents of children with autism report difficulties in parenting and often express high levels of parenting stress associated with raising a child with autism. Previous studies have reported that parents often are overwhelmed because of the stress associated with raising a child with autism. The present study investigated the relationship between parenting stress and 13 independent variables for mothers of children with autism in South Korea. Those 13 independent variables were Family Social Support, Number of Family Members, Family Composition, Family Monthly Income, Child's Severity of Autism, Child's Maladaptive Behavior, Child's Age, Year(s) Elapsed since Diagnosis, Child's Gender, Mothers' Feelings of Guilt, Duration of Marriage, Mothers' Education, and Mothers' Occupation. One hundred sixty Korean mothers of children with autism between the age of three and twelve years old participated in the study. Participants responded to five instruments that measured the one dependent variable and four of the independent variables. The remaining eight independent variables were assessed through a demographic questionnaire. Correlations and a stepwise multiple regression analysis for all dependent and independent variables were conducted. The results of the correlations revealed that Child's Age, Year(s) Elapsed since Diagnosis, Child's Severity of Autism, Child's Maladaptive Behavior, and Mothers' Feelings of Guilt were significantly correlated with parenting stress. The stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that Child's Age, Year(s) Elapsed since Diagnosis, and Mothers' Feelings of Guilt constituted the set of variables that best predicted parenting stress for Korean mothers. The current study sheds light on predictors of parenting stress among Korean mothers of children with autism. The results of this study provided information that may offer a basis for policy makers to gain a better understanding of what is necessary to support mothers and families of children with autism in Korea.
